How to Measure Your Blinds

How to Measure Your Blinds

Whether you’re choosing roller, Roman, or Venetian blinds, this step-by-step guide will help you measure with confidence. And if you're unsure at any point, the HIBO team is here to help — we offer expert advice, free consultations, and professional home measuring services across London.

Step 1: Decide How You Want the Blinds to Fit

Option A – Inside Recess Fit

Blinds sit neatly inside the window frame (recess), ideal for a clean, built-in look.
Best for windows with deep recesses and no obstructions.

  • Width: Measure the width of the recess in three places – top, middle, and bottom. Use the narrowest measurement to ensure the blind fits properly.
  • Extra tip: If you want your blinds to go all the way down to the floor, measure the width between the skirting boards at the bottom — this is often the narrowest point.
  • Drop (height): Measure from the top of the recess to the windowsill or floor, again in three places. Use the shortest measurement.

Option B – Outside Recess Fit

Blinds are mounted outside the window frame, covering the wall or overlapping the recess.

Great for full light block, shallow recesses, or uneven frames.

Step 2: Measuring for Inside Recess Fit

  • Width: Measure the width of the recess in three places – top, middle, and bottom.
Use the narrowest measurement (to ensure the blind fits inside).
  • Drop (height): Measure from the top of the recess to the windowsill or floor, again in three places.
    Use the shortest measurement.

Tip:We will make a small deduction to ensure a smooth fit inside the recess – you don’t need to adjust your measurements.

Step 3: Measuring for Outside Recess Fit

  • Width: Measure the width of the window and add 10–20cm on each side to ensure full coverage.
  • Drop (height): Measure from where you plan to mount the blind (above the window) to where you want it to end (e.g. sill or floor).
    • Usually mount at least 10cm above the window for better light control.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Metal tape measure
  • Notebook or phone to record measurements
  • Pencil for marking positions if needed

Tips

  • Always measure in centimetres (cm)
  • Double-check every measurement
  • For Roman blinds, ensure there’s space above the window for the blind to stack when raised
