How to Measure Your Curtains

How to Measure Your Curtains

We’ll help you discover the perfect curtain style for your space — whether you prefer the sleek look of a contemporary Wave, the elegant structure of a Double Pinch Pleat, or a more relaxed, informal finish. Explore our gallery section to spark ideas.

You can choose from our curated in-house fabric collection or browse through a wide range of samples from our extended library. We also offer a carefully selected variety of curtain poles and tracks, from minimalist modern systems to timeless steel or brass finishes — all tailored to suit different styles and budgets.

Step 1: Choose Your Fitting Type

Decide whether you want your curtains to hang:

  • Inside the recess (rare for curtains – more common for blinds)
  • Outside the recess / wall-to-wall (recommended for curtains)

Step 2: Measure the Width

Option A – You Have a Pole or Track Already

Measure the full width of the track or pole (excluding finials).

  • Add 15–30cm on each side if the pole/track is not yet installed – this allows curtains to stack neatly when open.

Option B – No Pole/Track Yet

Measure the window width, then add:

  • 30–40cm total (15–20cm each side)
  • You can adjust this based on wall space and aesthetic preference

Step 3: Measure the Drop (Height)

If Using a Curtain Pole

  • Measure from the underside of the curtain rings to where you want the curtain to finish.

If Using a Curtain Track

  • Measure from the top of the track to your desired drop.

Common Drop Options

  • To windowsill – add ~15cm below sill
  • To below sill – ~15–20cm below sill
  • To floor (full length) – stop 1–2cm above floor for neat lookPuddled look – add 3–5cm extra for a luxurious drape

HIBO offers made-to-measure curtains tailored to your preferred drop, including floor-grazing or puddled styles.

Step 4: Curtain Fullness & Style

We’ll handle the right gather/fullness ratio depending on your heading style:

  • Wave: needs wider tracks – 3x fullness
  • Pencil pleat / pinch pleat: standard 2x to 2.5x
  • Eyelet: depends on pole width – usually 1.5x to 2x

You don’t need to calculate fullness – just give us the correct width and drop, and we’ll do the rest.

Quick Tips

  • Use a metal tape measure for best accuracy
  • Always double check your measurements
  • Measure in centimetres (cm)Measure each window individually – even similar ones may differ!
